DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, CYPRUS.

Nicosia, 14th January, 1954.

Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

Thank you for your letter of 26th December and the note on your recent Enkomi campaign which has since been published in the press here. A summary was broadcast by the local station.

I enclose an extract from the ILN with the note by Dikaios on his second tablet. The Fasti Archaeologici do not unfortunately make any reprints of the reports they publish and so we cannot meet your second request.

The Custodian at Salamis is now going ahead with the mending of your pottery. I should add, referring to your letter of 13th December, that arrangements have now been made for the period he spent working for you at Enkomi to be regarded as leave without pay as far as we are concerned. What you paid him was more than his normal pay from us.

As regards George Anastassiou, under our agreement we lend you his services free of charge and continue to pay his normal salary. But while he is working for you we do not, however, pay him the normal subsistence allowance of 12s./6p. per day to which he is entitled when working away from Nicosia. You have this year paid him £2.12.6 per day assuming I presume that he received no salary from us. In fact he received his normal salary of £1.3.7 from us. I imagine therefore you will wish
