Mr J.Lapierre French Consular Agency Larnaca Cyprus

Dear Mr Consul,

I thank you for your letter of 15 cr and return to you herewith, signed, the receipts relating to the grant of 2.100 livres for the research of 1951 to Enkomi. I would be grateful if you would have the sum transferred to my account at the Barclays Bank in Famagusta.

I have just put the finishing touches to volume I of Enkomi- Alasia, devoted to the results of the excavations of 1946 to 1950. The workwas very long and will occupy nearly 400 pages and more than 100 plates. Research had to be undertaken at the British Museum for the comparative material previously found. I think the volume may come out in the autumn. I am currently correcting the proofs.

Part of the grant is going to be used to help pay for the publication, which is costing more than expected. I will therefore make only a short stay on the island this year in connection with stratigraphic checks, and will postpone the continuation of the excavations proper probably to next year.

In any case I will have the opportunity to see you again. The results of the latest excavations are very rich historically and will make Cyprus once again a centre of archaeological research particularly instructive for the still most obscure centuries of Mediterranean protohistory.

I also hope that on my return I will be able to settle the gift Stylianou which is still in the hands of the museum. I had refused that it be shared between the Nicosia museum and the Louvre, the former had ample time to deal with this group and, I believe, in due time gave up the acquisition.

Please present my very respectful regards to Mrs Lapierre and believe me, dear Mr Consul, your sincerely devoted
