16th December1969.

Dear Professor Schaeffer,

Thank you very much for your letter and the communique for the press which I am having translated also into Greek for distribution.

With regard to the accelerated rhythm of excavations I should like to ask you not to yield to any suggestions like the one you mentioned. Archaeologists have their own sound methods and know exactly how to go about such problems. I should think that "collaboration" and "Joint" expeditions have not always had a "happy ending", and should, to my mind, be avoided. If only we could do justice to the hitherto excavated area by publication! There are many generations of archaeologists who will succeed us, theirs will be the task to take the work further. Tourism and scholarship are two things which are different from one another.

I thank you in advance for the detailed report and photos for the BCH which I shall be expecting towards the end of December so that I may send the whole report in time to M. Amandry.

I take this opportunity to wish you and Madame Schaeffer a very happy New Year, and my wife joins with me wholeheartedly.

Yours very sincerely,
