to suggest to you right away a first gesture: the French Archaeological Mission is the oldest in Cyprus and whose continuity has already exceeded a quarter century. There, where two English missions and one Swedish have failed, it succeeded in discovering the capital of independent Cyprus of the 2nd millennium, the Alasia of the time of the New Egyptian Empire and to identify there the residence of an Achaean king therefore Greek, whose conquest of the island goes back to 1400 BC. J. C. This satisfaction given to the Cypriots during these long years of struggle, but of which I have never publicly made known, earned the Archaeological Mission French a place near the heart of the patriots so fervent Cypriot. But the French Mission has been renewed from two years to two years, it has remained temporary and like an appendix to our Mission operating in Syria. By raising it to the rank of a permanent mission (but without obligation for its current director to reside on the island permanently) this old French undertaking would present itself in the eyes of our Cypriot friends in a new form, closer to them and with promises of duration and possible- ly of development. - Here is the first gesture that I suggest to you. - See you soon, and please believe, my dear Ambassador and Friend, to my very cordially devoted sentiments. C F A Schaeffer
