… by side with the fine buildings with the earlier walls? The remains discovered under room X of our building suggest that there were. Is it really necessary to attribute the erection of rubble walls in large ashlar buildings to a kind of people other than the original builders and to another period?

In conclusion the attribution by me of floor V to the 12th century was justified by the presence of 12th century pottery under the hearth at the centre of that floor. To suggest that the pottery overlying floor V was the result of re-occupation in the 12th century of a building first used in the 11th as suggested by Dr. Schaeffer is at present a matter of conjecture. I still prefer to regard it as the result of re-occupation after repair of a building built and (soon after) burnt in the early 12th century. But if Dr. Schaeffer's view is supported by the results of further investigation in our building and confirmed by evidence collected in other similar large buildings, I will not hesitate to accept it.
Room XIII: Under the original floor (V) is a tomb chamber (p.14 of Dr. Schaeffer's analysis). Both the chamber and the dromos are sealed by the floor. Unfortunately a part of the floor overlying the dromos was destroyed by a looters' pit but it is clear that the floor once sealed the whole dromos as it now seals a part of it. The chamber was looted but the small quantity of pottery found included a number of late M.C. vases, white slip I and II, plain white ware I and at least one Mycenaean fragment. The fact that the floor sealls the dromos means that the tomb was abandoned at the time of the making of floor V.
It is clear from the stratification (which remains visible and will be preserved for inspection by Dr. Schaeffer) that the dromos was cut through floors dating before the compound, then used and finally abandoned when floor V of Room XIII was made, sealing the whole area both tomb and the previous floors. The same floors were also cut by foundation trenches of the compound at a small distance east of the dromos. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion [handwritten: that] … continues
