Notes by P.Dikaios on Dr.Schaeffer's analysis of P.Dikaios' report on his "compound" at Enkomi. _____________
Reading through Dr. Schaeffer's analysis of my Report I find that there exist certain misunderstandings which I should like to clear up before passing to the particular points raised in his analysis.
First I must assure him that I never intended to "annihilate" or "wreck" his work at Engomi, nor have I ever thought of twisting the evidence so that it may suit my dating of the compound. Had my intention been such I would not have taken the trouble of producing as complete a record as possible of all the ceramic evidence discovered. Photographs and descriptions of almost all the sherds have been supplied for the Report, simply to enable the reader, and primarily Dr. Schaeffer, to form his own opinion.
Secondly it was understood that the Report was to/ sent to Dr. Schaeffer in the first instance before going to press so that it would have the benefit of his comments.
Thirdly Dr. Schaeffer complains that at the time when I was digging I had reported to him that I had reached purely Mycenaean levels and that the tomb found outside the north facade belonged to the compound and that now I changed my mind without making reference to him. This is not entirely the case. What I wrote to him during the excavations was written before I studied the ceramic evidence as a whole. It is true that the few Mycenaean fragments found on the hearth of Room XIV (floor V) gave me the impression that the floor was of Myceneaaen date. It was only last winter, as the study of the pottery progressed, that I realized that the same floor yielded also twelfth century pottery. The discovery of the deposit under the hearth came right at the end, that is in the spring of this year in the course of various trials to verify certain obscure points. As to the tomb outside the north facade, I originally considered it contemporary with the compound simply because I had then thought that the lowest floor of the compound was purely Myceneaean, again before going through the pottery.
