In the area previously opened the removal of the late floors left in situ (e.g. in the east Building) and investigations below them may similarly proceed and still leave ample material which is relevant to points on which opinions differ for excavations at a later date.

I should add that Dikaios has completed a small eastward extension to lay bare the street along the east facade throughout its length. The latter has been terribly destroyed, its line being marked by a whole row of stone-looters' pits.

Within the compound some of the time-devouring work in the tombs (so far all looted) will also proceed, clearing through the looters' pits so that the evidence of their relationship with the floors above may remain in situ.

At the north wall the first section opened round one of the visible stones laid bare an obtuse angle from which a tower projects. Further sections are now being opened, which have disclosed a well preserved stretch of the wall from the Styllos road to a point some 50 metres west of it.

In the above programme for the current work we are undertaking more than you suggested we should at this stage, though we do not depart from the basis of our agreement that we should excavate systematically, down to the rock, areas selected by you after joint consultations. I feel that it will be to our mutual advantage not to delay our work, particularly as the Government has voted funds for it which cannot be carried over into 1951, though I have already asked for a repetition of the vote in 1951 on the assumption that our collaboration will continue. Some new evidence bearing on the date of the compound may come to light
