No. 3636.

DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, CYPRUS.

Nicosia, 3rd June 1947.

Dear Mr. Schaeffer,

As we have now exhausted the £100 you advanced to meet expenses in connection with your Kourion excavations, I append a list of our expenditure up to 30th April 1947:

Wages of temporary workmen ... £10.16.7. Levelling the excavation area ... £25.0.0. Miscellaneous expenses ... £6.12.5. Compensation for non cultivation of certain lands within the excavations area ... £46.0.0. Total ... £97.11.7. ==========

There are some outstanding items including £13 compensation not yet paid to one of the owners and £6 expenses in connection with the reinstatement of the plots. The watchman's wages at the rate of £3 per month will also continue. Further expenditure, including the above, should not exceed £30 before you return to Cyprus.

As your £300 contribution for acquisitions has been received from Barclays Bank and paid to your account in our Antiquities Fund, we shall have no difficulty in meeting the further expenditure. But I thought I should let you know the position in case you wished to keep the £300 intact for acquisitions, by reaching a further balance to pay for the other expenditure.

Yours sincerely,
