… with the thirty or so workmen planned; but we will be obliged to engage a few additional wheelbarrows (4 or 5), as the earth is becoming too cumbersome.
Summing up briefly - as you know, at Enkomi the subsoil is complicated - here is an overview of the results. About 50 m. of continuous, fairly well preserved ramparts are preserved in place. Beyond towards the East, we lose the rampart at about 40 m. from the cliff. Towards the West we are only beginning to look for it. This enclosure includes rubble-stone alterations, probably later, fairly numerous. The place of a door could not be determined with certainty. Late, post-Mycenaean constructions, probably, extend towards the exterior, but the sherds - rare in this region - allow us to affirm that the essential part of the fortification dates back at least to the Mycenaean period and probably quite high within it. The Rampart Quarter - as we have thus named the dwellings revealed by the perpendicular trench (25 m. of l.) - attests that the constructions came up to a slight distance from the enclosure. Mycenaean and Sub-Mycenaean civilisation is clearly represented and we reach, in places, a Middle Bronze layer. Elsewhere, the rock has already stopped us. No sensational finds; a tomb of the XIIe c., not looted, has nevertheless proved less poor than one might have expected from this moderately prosperous period. I enclose with my letter the first photos of the area; they are rather poor, for which I apologise, and of a ridiculous format; the absence of electricity in Nicosia is the cause. — Our intentions are to widen the
