My dear friend,

, written sideways: 1.900 £ Ch = 900.000 frs / replied from Bey. on 29. X.I received this morning by the bag your letter of 22-9-47 as well as the official letter in cipher (by bag) concerning the payment of 812.000 francs. to the archaeological mission in Cyprus. I shall not fail to attend to it urgently but a delay of 15 to 20 days may have occurred. At present I have, like every cash reserve, only about 200 pounds and I have demanded the replenishment of the cash always well supplied but always too short given the always unforeseen demands of warships such as the Arromanches which sometimes demand several thousand pounds at a single stroke, whereas the accounts department in Paris has the somewhat outdated habit of reckoning reserves for 3 or six months by multiplying by one three or six the budget monthly made up of the consul's pay and of the two auxiliaries.
