15th March 1948
Dear Mr. Megaw,
Since my return at the beginning of this year I hesitated writing to you before my plans for 1948 have taken definite shape. But first, I want to thank you for the Cyprus Calendar 1948, delightful as its predecessors, and which I am very glad to add to my collection. I admired the front page picture taken by you from St. Hilarion, which I also took last year but with less artistic effect.
The new collapse of the franc has pushed up the Cyprus pound for us to astronomical height. So unfortunately, this year's credit has vanished to nearly a half. But I still hope to be able to come over in autumn for a very short season. I think just to complete the excavations of the fine buildings at the northern part of the town, the plan of which now finished by Pironin, revealis an extensive construction of probably official character.
But before definitely deciding on what we should do this year at Enkomi, I would like to know if the scheme of the combined operation has been adopted by you and what your own and Dikaios' eventual plans are. If I come over to Enkomi, it will not be before october or november after my return from Turkey where I shall excavate at Malatya in August and september.
Please let me know as soon as possible your decision about the combined operations in order that we can adjust our respective plans.
On the other hand I would be glad to know what the posttion is at present with the land purchase and what funds I should reserve to this purpose. I hope the newly excavated part with the fine building (north quarter) has been protected by an enclosure and is looked after by a guard, since the quality of the stone and a certain amount of smaller finds which remain on the spot, may tempt the villagers or passer-by.
Etienne Coche de la Ferté has reported to me that after I had left, Giorgios manifested his discontent about the presence of the second foreman, Michaelis, a younger man. He apparently declared he would not again work with [handwritten: initials]. I hope that in the meantime this has settled down, for it seems to me necessary to form a man who can succeed Giorgios, and Michaelis seems to be
