Dear Dr. Schaeffer,
I have now been into the question of building a small excavation house at Enkomi. The attached provisional plans, based on your sketch, and the following notes indicate the type of building which seems most suitable in the circumstances:
Walls.- Stone set in mud-mortar. This is the cheapest form of wall as stone is availabe.
Roof.- Round wooden beams (volikia), above which canes, above which mud, above which half-round local tiles. This is much superior to the flat mud roof which requires annual repair; but it is somewhat more costly.
Verandah.- The tile roof is extended to cover this. It is made low at the outer edge so as to give maximum protection from the sun. If the verandah is made wider than the 9 feet proposed, the whole building would have to increase in height. An alternative is to have a lighter wooden construction covered with plaited matting or other temporary material; this would be cheaper but would give less protection from the sun.
Floors.- Both of the rooms and of the verandah - square stone slabs of the "marmara" variety.
Windows.- Plain wooden shutters and inside them the usually glazed windows. Two small ventilator windows are provided high in the end walls.
Doors.- Solid wood (no glass panes).
Plaster.- Interior of all rooms to be plastered. Exterior: only the front wall (= backwall of the verandah) to be plastered.
An estimate of the cost of the above building, given in the form of a provisional tender by a local builder in Enkomi, is £560. This does not include the cost of digging a pit for the latrine.
In regard to window and door openings, I have followed your sketch. This represents the minimum requirements only, and I should advise putting a window in the back wall of the workshop which otherwise is lit only through the doors. When you have decided about details of this kind and considered the alternatives indicated above, we could,if you wish[handwritten: d]to go ahead with the building, prepare final plans and obtain a firm tender from the builder.
Handwritten: With kind regards from us both
Yours sincerely,
