These excavations have proved that the town was already in being in the middle Bronze Age and survived till the submycenaean period. In five successive town levels evidence has been found that during this time it suffered destruction by fire and earthquake on more than one occasion. The reason for its abandonment remains obscure, but it is beyond doubt that in the Late Bronze Age it was the predecessor of Medieval Famagusta and Classical Salamis in the role of chief city in the eastern part of the Island.
Detailed conclusions must await further excavations. A recent announcement states that the systematic exploration of this important site has now been selected as a major objective of Cypriot archaeology. On the invitation of Dr. Schaeffer, the Cyprus Department of Antiquities has decided to join forces with the French expedition for that purpose. The Department has nominated Mr. P. Dikaios, F.S.A., Curator of the Cyprus Museum, to take charge of its archaeological participation in the joint expedition. It is hoped that joint exploration of the site will begin in the course of 1948; in administrative and other matters collaboration has already started.
