Acquisition of Land at Enkomi.
With reference to your letter 515/46 of 16th July 1948, the Commissioner of Famagusta reports that the value of the land was assessed by the Chief Clerk I.R.O. at £25 per donum. Owners 1 and 2 of the Schedule aligned undertaking to sell at this price. The others also signified agreement but claimed either compensation for expenses already incurred on ploughing etc. of permission to sow this year and collect the crop. They were therefore given an assurance in the following terms:
"On acquisition of their properties by Government they will be offered, in addition to the purchase price of the land, the lease for cultivation during the 1948/49 season at the rate of £1 per donum, such parts of their properties as will remain unaffected by the excavations (their limits will be pointed out to them before the sowing season); provided that if any areas which have already been ploughed and prepared are reserved for excavation, they will receive compensation in respect of such areas at the rate of £1.10.0."
On receipt of this assurance the remaining owners also signed undertakings to sell at £25 per donum.
2. I enclose a draft power of Attorney which I propose to submit to the Hon. Colonial Secretary for signature. Will you kindly revise and return it and let me have your observations if any at your early convenience.
