Dear Dr Schaeffer,
George has now returned from Engomi with three tenders for the removal of the dump on the south side of the north excavation. One from a Famagusta contractor is quite fantastic. The others are from Engomi: one from a combine of cartmen who quote £180, the other by Andreas L. Kokkinos, who owns a truck, is for £175. George believes that it would cost considerably more to do the job by direct labour in the usual way, and says that the present reasonable offers are made because there is little work in the village at this time of year.
We have approached a contractor in Nicosia who has an efficient earth-moving machine, but it would not be worth his while to move it to Engomi for a job under £400-£500.
It is possible that by calling for tenders by notice in the Press we might get other offers and that an offer less than £175 might result. If however you are satisfied with that figure I will have the work done as soon as I hear from you as a charge against your account in our Antiquities Fund, where the balance is £213.19.2p.
Yours sincerely,
