corner of a room, to my eye a construction of utilitarian rather than of ritual character, in which it would have been almost concealed from view. The attachments to the feet, on the other hand, indicate that it stood originally on a base, presumably in some central position for all to see and worship.
One advantage of a preliminary publication of the statue such as we had in mind would lie in the comments which experts would then be able to make. These would perhaps ensure that the full account appearing in the joint-publication would be complete and final. In the case of your own excavations some such advantage has resulted from your A.J.A. article in the shape of Dussaud's identification. I had also in mind to anticipate the requests for information which we foresee; already the press correspondents both local and foreign are bothering us a good deal. However, at present, pending discussion with Dikaios, I do not wish either to plead for or to abandon the idea of some form of preliminary publication.
I should add that our intention always was to send you the draft of any preliminary publication, so as to be sure that the references in it to your initiative at Enkomi were such as would secure for you and those who have backed you the credit that you so well deserve.
We find that by utilizing some doors, windows and timber which we already have, we could construct at Enkomi a small house to the design shown in the attached sketch for £240. The two rooms and verandah would I think be just big enough to serve as a small dig house, which could be extended later if necessary. If you authorise me to draw on your account for the £100 I mentioned in my last letter, I am prepared to go ahead with it at once, even though it means that we would meet more than half the cost.
Yours sincerely,
