Dear Schaeffer,
I write this to Beirut in the hope of catching you before you leave for France. It is about the mending of your pottery at the Khan. Georgho under-estimated the quantity in the sacks and finds that to complete the mending will require 4 more weeks work for him and Mikhail, over and above the period which you authorised us to pay Mikhail's wages. That means a further £C2 is needed if we are to continue the work as at present and complete it.
If you authorise me to spend this extra amount (funds are available in your deposit) it should be possible to complete all the mending in time for Porter to draw everything that is necessary during his forthcoming visit. Furthermore Porter would have the advantage of the services of George and Mikhail for whatever he may need during his work in the Khan.
If you do not want to spend this extra money, then we shall hope by degrees to get our staff to do the work whenever they can be spared, but it would in that case be out of the question to get it all done before or during Porter's visit.
At present we are again employing Mikhail on Dhikra' pottery at the Museum and we hope to be able to retain him until I hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
