June 26.,1952.

Dear M.Megaw,

I receive your letter of June 23rd, the day before my departure for a three weeks rest after a year of heavy work[handwritten: ni nice] my last seasons of excavations in Turquie and the Near East of work on publications and teaching[handwritten: ,].

I am very much disappointed that my volume and the acknowledgements it contains regarding your departments excavations do not meet with your approuval.

The best I can do at this hour when I have to prepare my journey south and thus being prevented from answering in detail, is not to accept your note of protest. I feel indeed it has been lodged prematurely and before you [handwritten: h]ad time to do more than skim through my volume as you sayin your letter.

After you have read my work and compared my analyse of building 18 with that given by your curator[handwritten: /]concerning the neighbouring building in his report rejected by me as general editor for publication (see my letter of June 22.,1950) you will, I hope convince yourself that my stratigraphical conclusions are fundamentally different from those arrived at by your collaborator,[handwritten: with regard to the main problems, the date of the ashlar buildings of Plots V.] You know well also[handwritten: ,] that it is [handwritten: f]orbidden by custom and tact to an editor to refer to an unpublished report submitted to him by an au[handwritten: t]hor or to use it before publication. Even if I would have asked and obtained you[handwritten: r] permission, how could I have referred to the report [handwritten: t]without rejecting immediately your curators conclusions before even the reader having seen[handwritten: x/] this report ?

My careful avoidance [handwritten: t]o mention any matter which could have forestalle[handwritten: d] your curqtors research or opinion throughout the whole book[handwritten: ,] which you will notice by reading it, _was thus absolute intention on my behalf_[handwritten: ,] and I can only assure you that it is bona fide
