Dear Schaeffer,
I got back here a fortnight ago after an enjoyable vacation, including an interesting week at the Byzantine Congress in Palermo. Since my return Dikaios has resumed work at Enkomi: at the north town wall, just beyond the road, where some irregularities may denote a gate; and at the "temple" site, where the area on the west side cleared last year to the topfloors is now being dug lower to study the relationship of the structures exposed with the main building. Further work is planned in the "temple" itself and in the buildings abutting on the town wall.
I have three letters of yours to reply to about the following matters arising out of Enkomi-Alasia I.
Title page. The wording is agreeable and we shall follow the same heading when we publish.
Preface. Since the book is to cover your two last campaigns, which followed our entry into the enterprise, I think some announcement of our collaboration is necessary. The wording on the title-page in any case calls for some explanation. When we publish in due course some corresponding explanation will be given but that does not justify any postponement of the announcement. As to its form, I think your reference to this matter in your previous report to the Academie des Inscriptions would be a suitable model. For though we have not got that report, I judge from Dussaud's summary in Syria XXVII p.377 that something on the same lines would do.
Historical conclusions in your last report to the Academie. This certainly surprised us after your reaction to the last pages of Dikaios' report, for you advised avoidance of historical discussions at this stage. Yet it is gratifying when we find that what you then found fault with is now acceptable. Similarly on matters more strictly archaeological, where there were formerly rather embarrassing differences of interpretation, it is a relief to know that the gaps between your view and those recorded in Dikaios' report are now narrower and in a number of cases (e.g. as regards the fire on floor V and the earthquake) his view is now shared by you. Indeed we wonder whether the discrepancies which remain do really justify your insistance on the postponement of any preliminary publication of the results of our work. Consequently we are seriously considering responding to the repeated requests of the correspondent of "the Times" to contribute an article on our work at Enkomi. If we did this, we would send you the draft before publication.
In any case the report which Dikaios wrote under great pressure for Enkomi last year, whatever its faults may be, was I think a valuable contribution to our joint enterprise, and as such some mention of it in your recent report to the Academie and of the fact that it was made available to you in advance of publication would have been welcome, indeed customary. Instead I find among sundry acknowledgements no reference whatever to the work of the British element in the joint-expedition. I feel that we have been making a good contribution to the success of the enterprise both in field work and in interpretation and I hope that in the volume now in the press there will be adequate reference to it which will reassure those who provide us with
