Dear Schaeffer,
I am sorry the air photograph was damaged in transit and hope the replacement I am sending with this arrives intact.
About the reproduction of these air photos I have now heard that no fee is payable but the following acknowledgement should be printed under each cliché: "R.A.F. official, Crown copyright reserved".
I also enclose drawings and photographs of the few pots which you left at the Museum for special attention. The sidespouted jug was rather too much for our draughtsman, especially as the pattern is very faint in some parts. His drawing has not been improved by my corrections! However I hope there is sufficient information for you to prepare the illustrations you require.
I am sorry I did not make it clear that we have definitely given up the idea of publishing any preliminary report on the area so far excavated by us at Enkomi. What I referred to (apart from ILN) are the occasional brief references, amounting usually only to a sentence or two, to current work at Enkomi in the archaeological news columns of various journals. We are approached by those responsible for these features, which certainly do not rank as preliminary reports, for information about excavations and discoveries in Cyprus for inclusion in them. Thus for example in "Archaeology in Greece" in JHS, LXX, 14 our Enkomi building is referred to (in information supplied by us) as a Mycenaean palace. We would not describe it so now, but we do not wish to do anything about it except that, when supplying further information for the next instalment of "Archaeology in Greece", we should give in a few lines the up-to-date picture of our building as we now see it in the light of subsequent excavation. This we have now done, and the text of what I have now sent, so far as it relates to Enkomi, was enclosed in my last letter. Incidentally John Cook says that in future he proposes to put my notes on Archaeology in Cyprus as an addendum to his "Archaeology in Greece" reports, above my own signature.
Dikaios, who reports to Fasti Archaeologici, will similarly in his next contribution bring up to date anything about our work at Enkomi already reported there. And George McFadden, who reports to the "Archaeological News" section of A.J.A., will be given similar information when he next asks for our "news". Finally in my annual report to the Government, which is now printed but not widely distributed, I shall have an annual opportunity of presenting in a few words an up to date summary of our work at Enkomi. Of any such contributions concerning Enkomi, which we distribute, we can send you copies as I have done in the cases of J.H.S. already.
Nobody attaches great weight to what is said in this sort of archaeological "reportage" and it is certainly not
