S/s Esperia, 7 September 1950
Dear Megaw, My arrival. Thank you for your letter of 9th August. I am on my way to Damascus and as soon as I know the date of my arrival in Cyprus, either before my work at Ras Shamra ( then it would be towards 18th of Sept.) or after (in november) I shall let you know. My present plans are to begin first at Enkomi. Dikaios' and your reply to my memorandum. I am certainly ready to see the material found during your 1948-1950 seasons and to go with you and Dik. through the stratigraphical and chronological problems of Enkomi. But having read now carefully through Dik' answer to my criticism, I have decided to fix a limit to my responsability of what Dik' or yourself are finally publishing about your results. That will, at the same time, leave you and your curator entire freedom to expres your opinions. I for myself reserve my right to publish in a future volume of the combined expedition my eventual criticism of your opinions should they, in my view, go against the interpretation of the site, its nature and history as I see them. I will not now answer Dik. arguments or questions. In a word and in conclusion of his note, he expects me to prouve that I am right and in that case he would accept my view. I feel that I need not do that. My experience of stratigraphical and chronological research has been laid down in works which have found general acceptance. I expect and archaeological opinion expects Dikaios to demonstrate that he is not wrong. He will have to take his responsability when he publishes. It was with regret that my decision was taken to declare myself no longer responsable for the opinions expressed in the final report of the Cyprus Antiquities Department participation in the venture. And I shall have, if needed, to say it in the Preface. Should they confirm, complet or correct my
