Press Communiqué. -----------
Dr. C.F.A. Schaeffer, M.A., D.Litt., has now left for France after completion of his latest excavation campaign at Enkomi, now considered to be Alasia, the Island's Bronze Age capital. Some of the finds from these excavations which were especially displayed in the Cyprus Museum, when Dr. Schaeffer lectured there on his latest discoveries, he has taken with him on loan for examination and treatment in Paris.
Work continues on the cleaning and mending of the pottery in Nicosia, where M. W.J. Forcer of the French Mission is engaged on plans and drawings. M. P. Fironin, Dr. Schaeffer's other architect and assistant has already left for France.
Before leaving, Dr. Schaeffer expressed his thanks to the Director of Antiquities and the Curator of the Cyprus Museum for the assistance they have afforded to the French Mission during its stay and operations at Enkomi. He particularly appreciated the work of the members of the Museum staff who were attached to his excavations and have since been assisting in the repair of the delicate glass vessels and other objects found. He also thanked the hundreds of villagers of the neighbourhood employed by him, men and women, whose work he said was excellent.
Dr. Schaeffer hopes to return to the Island late in the summer of 1950, and wished the Antiquities Department good luck when it resumes this year its research at Enkomi in accordance with the plans of the combined Expedition.
