No. 828/AS/DC/AG
The Consul of France to Lieu de Nelly Cyprus.
[illegible]
Fonds de l'Académie Claude Schaeffer at Enkomi (Cyprus) Grant.
Enclosed with a letter of 20 November 47 (Consulate of Cyprus) received today, Mr Tulaine Lapierre, consular agent of France at Larnaca, me forwards the receipts in triplicate signed by the person concerned on 17-11-47 for the sum granted as grant to the French professor Claude Schaeffer (Collège de France) [illegible].
A certificate of authority to receive the sums in question the Armenian had used since late October the deposit of the first grant granted at the beginning of 1947.
However, to make up the sum for a few days (ne cuisant had not been supplied from Paris and the telegram from Paris announcing the dispatch of about one million had taken three weeks to travel by ordinary bag and was received) he it was a question of an immediate payment) he was obliged to appeal to the kindness and goodness of Mr Lapierre, consular agent of France at Larnaca, who advanced to him, not without this causing some inconvenience, from his personal funds five hundred pounds sterling. Mr Schaeffer, who had not been to see the consular agent, therefore obliged this year to go and find him.
I must add on this subject that I have not the honour of Lapierre and add that I have not in their consular letter of notary [illegible] any connection with this incident. I have therefore prepared to do what is necessary to ensure reimbursement of the expenses, the amount of which must be paid by the notary to the person who made the request. He had the chance to put it on the Paris conjunction the taking of the retrocessions, which means that at any moment the Schaeffer was able to take our price, but without managing to do so nor to his detriment. This concerns what was achieved and without Lapierre was able to make himself strongly taken on the area of the excavations and know the opening to which was brought back to our French and our great return.
To recognise Lamarque Ruscoffer at nothing the true of the Consulate of Cyprus [illegible] of France in Lebanon. Lapierre does not need to leave the Cyprus of France in Lebanon at a passage at Larnaca.
P.S. I have a former [illegible] you [illegible] at Cyprus very useful.
