FRENCH ARCHAEOLOGICAL MISSION
Excavations at Enkomi (island of Cyprus)
St. Germain en Laye, 15 November 1946 The Director of the Enkomi Mission A Mr the Secretary General of the Commission of Excavations, the Directorate General of Cultural Relations/ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PARIS.
I sent you on 15 and 30 September and on 16 October three reports on the work and scientific results of the Enkomi Mission. I have the honour of sending you today a report on the use of the funds placed at the disposal of the Mission.
Expenditure was generally lower than the estimates, except for that concerning indigenous labour. I reported on 15 and 30 September last the difficulties encountered following two successive strikes provoked by communist agitators and the arrangement finally concluded with the 'trade unions' after a temporary suspension of the excavations. Under the terms of this arrangement, the wage of the workman was fixed at 11 shillings per day, that of women at 9, and of young people between 4 and 8 shillings, whereas the budget had provided only 5 shillings and a half per workman and per day. Labour expenditure therefore exceeded the estimates by about 500 Pounds.
The budgetary balance was restored as follows: 1° The expenses planned for the purchase and hire of excavation equipment could be reduced from 225 to 62 Pounds thanks to a loan of equipment granted by the military authorities and obtained through the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus; 2° By agreement with those concerned, the salaries of the architect and draughtsman of the Mission were paid in Syrian money and charged to the budget of the Ras Shamra Mission; 3° The travel costs from Turkey to Cyprus and from Cyprus to Syria were likewise borne by the budget of the Ras Shamra Mission.
In the enclosed statement I have entered the estimates in brackets beside the actual expenditure. I add 66 supporting documents in chronological order together with a copy of the excavation concession.
The Director of the Enkomi Mission.
