20th June, 1950

Handwritten: Dear Schaeffer,

Herewith packet No.5 of the list in my letter of 31st May, comprising the pottery statistics, which completes Dikaios' preliminary report. These tables relate to part V of his first contribution and should, I suggest, be inserted in the typescript after p.155.

I await with some anxiety your observations on Dikaios' report foreshadowed in your cable of 12th June. The enclosed tables, which could only be prepared after the cleaning and identification of the pottery had been completed earlier this year, summarise the evidence on which he based his chronology. In face of it, and particularly the association of Mycenean IIIc sherds with what appears to be the first occupation of the buildings, I felt he was justified in abandoning his first impression - prior to study of the pottery - that the building originated in the 14th century. Of course further excavations below the floors now exposed will produce more evidence and it may be that it will point to different conclusions and thus call for a re-assessment of the evidence from the 1948-49 campaigns. That was one of the reasons for my reluctance to agree to the preparation of my report on our area at this stage.

Meanwhile Dikaios is carrying on the lines indicated in my telegram of the 14th June and confirmed in yours of the 15th. There is nothing special to report yet.

Handwritten: Yours sincerely,
