DRAFT FOR ANNOUNCEMENT.
The excavations undertaken in 1946 and 1947 by the Mission Archéologique Française (French Archaeological Expedition to Cyprus) under the direction of Dr. C.F.A. SCHAEFFER have resulted in the discovery of the important Bronze Age town to which belonged the well-known necropolis at Engomi near Famagusta. Five successive townlevels going back to the second millenium B.C. and the town wall reinforced by square projecting towers have already been identified.
The systematic exploration of this important site has how been selected as a major objective of cypriot archaeology. On the invitation of Dr. Schaeffer, the Cyprus Antiquities Department of Antiquities has decided to join forces with the French expedition for that purpose. The Department has nominated Mr. P. DIKAIOS, curator of the Cyprus Museum, to take charge of its archaeological participation in the joint expedition. The combined undertaking will start in 1948, (or in 1949 if Mr. Dikaios is not available this year.)
