MEMORANDUM.

FRENCH ARCHAEOLOGICAL MISSION AND CYPRUS GOVERNMENT JOINT EXPEDI- TION TO ENGOMI.

The following paragraphs set out the arrangements agreed for the termination of the collaboration of the Cyprus Government Department of Antiquities with the French Archaeological Mission in the excavations at Engomi initiated by Dr. C.F.A.Schaeffer. This collaboration has been in operation since 21st November, 1947, on the basis of the Memorandum of that date signed by Dr. Schaeffer and the Director of Antiquities and approved on behalf of the Government of Cyprus by the Colonial Secretary's letter No.1157/32, dated 5th March, 1948, and on behalf of the French Archaeological Mission by Dr. Schaeffer's letter, dated 1st June, 1948.

1. The Joint-Expedition will be dissolved with effect from 31st December 1952, on which date the Memorandum dated 21st November, 1947, shall cease to have effect.

2. Before that date the Department of Antiquities will excavate only in the two areas which it has so far uncovered and will complete its excavations in those areas;

Provided that if owing to illness or other unavoidable cause these excavations cannot be completed before that date it will be permissible for them to continue into 1953, but without prolonging the life of the Joint-Expedition in other respects.

3. After the dissolution of the Joint-Expedition the excavation house at Engomi, the cost of erecting which was shared by the two parties, will be available for the French Archaeological Mission so long as its excavations at Engomi continue. Thereafter the house will be handed to the Department in good condition and will become the property of the Cyprus Government exclusively.

4. Reports on the results of excavations carried out in the duration of the Joint-Expedition shall be published separately by the two parties, but shall be issued in the name of the
