DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, CYPRUS.

Nicosia, 1st October, 1946.

Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

I think it will be as well if I record the salient points of our discussions during the week end.

I undertook to settle on your behalf the following items arising out of your current excavations if you let me have an advance of about £100. The estimated cost is noted in each case.

Subsistence allowance to George ) £30 and Symeon. ) Mending of tools. ... £ 5 Provisional fencing of trenches. £40 Wages of watchman (6 months) £18 Compensation to owners (1 year). £10 £103

We agreed that there was much to be gained by acquiring and enclosing the whole area of the Enkomi settlement, the cost of which is provisionally estimated at £600. In view of the Curium precedent I said that if your Mission was able to contribute half the cost I was hopeful of securing the balance from the Government. In such cases the land is registered as state property.

As regards the proposal that the Department should collaborate with your Mission in the further excavation of the Enkomi site, I have endeavoured in the enclosed memorandum to define the proposal in the more precise form it has taken in our discussions. Subject to your comments, I intend to communicate the proposal to the Cyprus Government in this form; the memorandum consequently deals with the subject from our viewpoint. I should be glad if you let me know of any points which are not in your opinion correctly recorded.

As I said before, if the proposal is accepted by your higher authorities and you inform me to this effect early in December, there would still be hope of getting the necessary funds voted in the Cyprus Government's 1947 budget. In that case we would probably be in a position to start excavations next spring.

Dr.C.F.A.Schaeffer, Savoy Hotel, Famagusta.

ANH.
