THE BRONZE STATUE OF A HORNED GOD.
(PL.LXXI - XLIV).
(1) The Context.
This statue was found in the building of which an account is given in the preceding chapter. Before describing it, it is necessary to give an account of its context and to recapitulate the stratigraphical and other conditions in room X in which it was found and in the adjoining area. And although the statue was found in the topmost level it is relevant to review the earlier history of this part of the building also.
The area occupied by rooms IX and X is the "alcove" to the rectangular pillar (46 on Pl.I), which in the original layout of the Main Building stood near the south end of its large central unit. The original floor in room XIII, the adjoining part of the central unit, was not found to extend south of the pillar into the part later occupied by rooms IX and X. Instead we found, at a slightly lower level, a rough surface formed of limestone / gravel
Handwritten: "south of the" inserted above "the" in line "to the rectangular pillar"
