to build the northern facade so as to avoid the dromos which was naturally a weak spot. Moreover the street which runs along the north facade passed over the tomb thus sealing it altogether. The pit dug by the looters hit the dromos and thus destroyed the stratification in it and over it but it is clear that the road passed the dromos and the chamber.

Another tomb-chamber also visited by looters was noticed under the original floor of room XIII but has not yet been examined. A few vases collected in it belong to the LCII period.

It thus appears that we have in the particular site examined by us the following earlier remains: tombs of the Middle Cypriot, architectural remains of LCI, tombs of LCII, the nature of which has yet to be identified. But what is remarkable is that we found no burials of the period of the compound, ie. LCIII, except for one earthgrave in the eastern part, dug in floor III (Pl. XXIV, 4),(1) and a pot burial of an /infant

(1) This grave contained an adult with an infant by its feet, and the only finds were a few paste beads found on the infant. Schaeffer already observed such LCIII graves at Enkomi, cf. Stratigraphie 393. He also reports (Ibid) the re-use by LCIII people of eearlier chamber tombs which had been emptied of their contents.
