… had probably been smashed during the earthquake have been found in the South Building on either side of the central doorway. Room XII of the East Building was also abandoned. This room had contained a central hearth remarkably well preserved (Pl. XXIV, 6, XXIII, 1) and at the time of the earthquake the roof which collapsed on it caught fire, as was clearly evidenced by a thick layer of ashes over the area of the hearth (wide section FF,Fig. 4) and by mudbricks from the collapsed walls which had been hardened by the heat of the fire. Apart from the sanctuary only the north-east part of the compound continued to be systematically used after the catastrophe.an Here on the floors of the reconstructed rooms we found vases which had been left there at the time of the final abandonment of the town.
The stratigraphical evidence thus shows three [handwritten: 1.] stages: the first corresponding with the erection of [handwritten: 2] [handwritten: ante before?] [handwritten: at Math - ? floor V?] the buildings[handwritten: s] and their use prior to the conflagration, the [handwritten: 2] second from the repairs and rearrangements which succeeded it upto floor II, on which the earthquake [handwritten: 3] occurred, and the last comprising the life of those few buildings which were reoccupied after the /earthquake
