We have seen that under the earliest floor of our building in room X we encountered LC1 remains and since the South Building over lies the same depression in the rock that was noticed under room X, the existence of an earlier deposit here is not unlikely. While this has yet to be verified by digging under floor VI (1) a few facts which I have observed are worth mentioning.

Both floor VI and the underlying deposit abut on the rubble foundation of the wall separating room III from room VI. If this deposit existed before the erection of the South Building, it would appear that after the building of the foundation walls it was levelled against them and its surface left to serve as a provisional floor. That it was so is corroborated by the discovery on this surface, which I called floor VI, of a fragment of a Mycenean IIIB goblet which belongs to the end of the Fifteenth century (695 a on Pl. XVIII, 1,4).(2) The remainder of the pottery

(1) It was partly done by a sounding in room VI (infra p. ...). (2) Cf. Furumark, The Chronology of Mycenaean Pottery p.145.
