operations were carried out as part of the same undertaking but the sequence is mentioned here to show the piecemeal method used in the construction of the building. No communication exists between room XI and the South Building.

Adjoining the west wall of the South Building is a room the walls of which are built of rubble. It is of irregular rectangular shape and its south wall abuts on the corner stone of the South Building. At the junction of its west and north walls stands a large rectangular dressed block (1). Access into the room is provided by a doorway in the north-eastern corner.

The North Building (Pl.I-IV, XII.1). The layout of this building remains somewhat obscure owing to the fact that the north-eastern and north-western parts have not yet been completely excavated. At present the plan appears to be as follows. There is first a narrow, elongated room (XXI) in the axis of the central /unit

(1) Opposite this block to the west there is a second one brought to light by the collapse of the edge of the excavated area during the winter 1949-50. We have therefore a doorway but further work is needed before its meaning is clear.
