… floor of the alterations (Pl.XIII.7). This new doorway gave access to the new room III which comprised the eastern part of old room III and room VI. The western doorway continued to be used for the new enlarged room II, including the western part of the old room III but was narrowed and provided with internal steps (Pl.XXIV.3).

The meaning of the steps can only be explained in relation with the external level. Along the facade of the South Building runs a road and it is evident that at the time of the alterations to the building its level was raised involving a high level for the thresholds in relation to the floors within and necessitated the provision of internal steps. The examaination of the pottery found in the layers which make up the road below the threshold level shows that there is no pottery of the type associated with the topmost or latest stage of the building. It would then appear that following the conflagration and the ensuing rearrangements on floor V the level of the street rose considerably. Other evidence of changes in the street / system

Note: the page's top-right number is 82 and there is a handwritten "=road" above "its level" and a handwritten "/" before "system".
