… it would appear that the superstructure was destroyed in the conflagration on floor V, although here the floor of the conflagration is the fourth from the top. Following the destruction all debris were removed and a new floor made on top (floor III). Before making the floor two bases for wooden posts were placed and it would seem that the previous structure was replaced by a kind of loggia. We shall see that on the succeeding floor II of the loggia several skulls of oxen were found immediately west of rooms X-IX in the former of which the bronze statue was found (1).
The South Building (Pl.XII.2). I have already mentioned that the effects of the conflagration which occurred on floor V of the Main Building seem to have been largely confined to the latter and that the south block escaped with much less damage. That this was so is proved by the better preservation of its walls, which still possess the upper dressed blocks.
(1) The angular rubble wall still further south, abutting on the west wall of the South Building will be dealt with in the description of the latter.
