Copy of Dr. C.F.A. Schaeffer
Printed: DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, CYPRUS.
Nicosia, 24th October, 1951.
Dear Haynes,
I have now had an opportunity of discussing with Schaeffer the questions you ask about the silver cup from Enkomi in your letter of 26th September.
He is agreeable to exhibition for a longer period and left it to me to decide what the period should be. We would welcome a press announcement, including a photograph provided it did not appear before an article he is preparing for the Illustrated London News, in which the cup will figure. This article is upon he is working up until the first volume of the Enkomi publication is out. It is now in the press and he expects it to be out by the end of the year.
Another factor is that Schaeffer would like to see the cup before it is returned to Cyprus. He will be visiting London next in about 5 months' time, possibly not till early April.
In the circumstances it seems that we should plan to exhibit the cup in the period January-March 1952. As regards the starting date perhaps the simplest thing would be for you to get in touch with him in December with a view to starting the exhibition and having the press announcement published on the date of their issue in which Schaeffer's article is published. I should be obliged if you sent me a copy of the press announcement in advance so that simultaneous publication here may be arranged. I hope this arrangement is agreeable. We are content that the cup should remain at the British Museum until next April.
Schaeffer is satisfied with the assurance that no facilities will be given to archaeologists to photograph, draw or study the cup while in the British Museum.
The label should read "In an intact tomb of the fourteenth century B.C."
With kind regards,
Yours sincerely,
