January 1964

Dear Mr Dikaios,

I present you with all my wishes for you and yours for the year that has begun. You have perhaps heard that during our campaign last October at Enkomi, we found in a hiding place of an immediately post-Mycenaean sanctuary the bronze statue, 35 cm high, of a helmeted and armed god who was standing on a Cypriot-type ingot in the form of an ox-hide. I asked the present Director of Antiquities of Cyprus, Mr Karageorghis, to send you a photograph of the statue under treatment for your personal information.

The conditions of burial and stratigraphy being similar to those of the horned god found by you some 75 metres from there during the excavations of the 'Joint Expedition' in 1949, I think, at present, that the two hiding places and two statues are contemporary or nearly so, near enough. May I consider your paper in Archäologischer Anzeiger 1962 p. 18 ff., on the bronze statue, as the expression of your definitive opinion on the date of the statue from the Temple area, so that I may cite it?

I am preparing the publication of volume II of Enkomi-Alasia, in which the discovery of the god on the ingot and other finds will be set out. I am once again hampered by the fact that your publication of the 'temple' and 'North town' areas', where so much comparative material for our own discoveries was found, has not yet appeared. I hope that we can look forward to the completion of your manuscript soon.

With a view to the publication of your work, I take the liberty of sending you a copy of paragraphs 8 and 9 of the Charter of the 'Joint Expedition' concerning publications. I take the liberty of asking where you wish your work to appear and of asking you to send me a copy of your manuscript as soon as it is completed.

Please accept, dear Mr Dikaios, with my wife's remembrances and my respectful regards to Mrs Dikaios, the expression of my distinguished and best sentiments.
