confirmed. This is so, in particular, for the predominance of mud-brick architecture on rubble foundations in the levels of Cypriot Iron I. The existence of a superstructure in brick could be established for almost all the walls of the most recent level. For the older layers, the brick was generally removed during the rebuildings: it is clear, in certain places, that the intention was to recover the old foundations of stone in order to set new rubble foundations on top of them.
The excavation reached the rock at some points. Most of the time, the layers of Early Cypriot Iron I, characterised by the pottery of Myc. III C:1, rest directly on the virgin soil and the Bronze Age levels are absent, at least to the South of street no. 5. To the North of it, these levels exist to the West of Building 18, the only place where the rock appears over a certain surface in the present state of clearance.
Three main building phases [illegible] are recognisable in the eastern part of the area, after the destruction marked by the fire of Building 18. A fourth and last phase is attested only by a few surviving wall remains.
The plan of the quarter at the most recent level is characterised by the presence of alleys (or blind alleys) N-S which penetrate the block of houses and give access to entrances set back from the main street no. 5, behind the small rooms which border it and which often seem to be shops or stalls, especially to the South of the street. The industrial character of several installations, both to the North and to the South, has been confirmed by the discovery of fragments of crucibles and tuyères, in the upper levels as in the deep layers, from the beginning of the 12th century. In several places, especially at the eastern end of the area, thick cendreuses layers de cendres and pits full of ash, corresponding to the floors of the late 12th and early 11th centuries, are no doubt due to these industrial activities and not to
