FRENCH ARCHAEOLOGICAL MISSION of ENKOMI-ALASIA

3 XXIIe CAMPAGNE. 10 mars-16 avril 1971 4 Summary report de E. et J. LAGARCE. of the excavations in the west sector of the town, along Area of STREET no. 5 (cf CR 5, 6 W, and CR 5, 5 W).

The excavations began on 15 March and continued until 10 April. The number of workmen employed on the area CR 5 fluctuated between fifteen and twenty on average. The direction and the archaeological observation was ensured by E. et J. Lagarce, assisted by Chr. Edens. The rains considerably hampered the working but, in compensation, they kept the mosquitoes away. Mr<s> Paul Garczynski and Christopher Edens collaborated on the work./ The limits of the excavation remained the same as in 1970 and the clearance begun then was continued. The mission assigned to us included not only the clearance of the structures of the different levels, but also, more especially, the exhaustive collection of the pottery from the layers of Cypriot Iron I, whose restoration must be pursued as far as possible. in order to allow, to As an experiment, it was to allow a complete survey and a study of the pottery material used in a small part of the town through these periods, a study which could not be made in detail. up to now. The situation of the area is particularly favourable to this programme: the region extending to the West of the town, in the lower part of it, has preserved all of its archaeological layers, whereas, most of the time, in the eastern part of the site, the upper layers have been eroded. Moreover, the very thickness of the deposits above the rock has discouraged tomb robbers, and the area has only a exceptionally small number of pits dug by clandestine diggers. The research this year has only concerned the eastern part of the 1970 area. Certain characteristic features of the appearance of this sector, already sensed last year, have
