(in italicsIntroduction. The XXIst excavation campaign conducteds at the site of Enkomi-Alasia lasted from 15 March to 10 April. Apart from Professor C.F.A. Schaeffer, who attended the start of the work, and gave us the benefit of d'éga<s> his experience of the site,/ the team excavation, led by Olivier Pelon, was composed of Jacques-Claude Courtois, William Johnstone, Élisabeth and Jacques Lagarce,, Carmen Sauvage, Martine Sillanoli, Dominique Beyer, Luc Pfirsch, and James Robinson , and Christopher Eden<s> Edens,/ ; the architects were Paul Garczynski and Françoise Laroche. Mr Vassos Karageorghis, director of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, followed the work with sympathy and came to visit us several times at the area. Furthermore, Mr Jean de Garnier des Garets, ambassador of France in Nicosia, gave his help to the excavation at the time when material problems arose.
The research covered different sectors of the town. Some constituted the continuation of work undertaken begun earlier. Thus W. Johnstone completed his study of the tholos in bricks and stones founds in 1963 (1) in view of the publication which is to appear shortly in Enkomi-Alasia II. J-Cl. Courtois completed, for his part carried out the clean- the exploration ing systematic of of an area rectangular situated in the sector where a roll of baked clay inscribed was found in 1967. Lagarce resumed their research west of the main street north-south, on either side of the [illegible] street 5, not far from the build- ing 18. On the other hand, a new area was [illegible] North of the
opened by O. Pelon in quarter 4 W, extending to the North of the same building 18 and west of the sector designated as area I or "temple area" (3).
