REPORT ON THE SOUNDINGS CARRIED OUT IN SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER OF THE YEAR 1958 AT ENKOMI (CYPRUS).

The soundings of 1958 were carried out to verify the indications given by the magnetic survey of Prof. Aitken. Only the archaeological results proper will be discussed here; in this report, Roman numerals correspond to points showing a magnetic anomaly, and Arabic numerals to topographic points. The soundings will be described in numerical order; for each of them, the study of the ground layers will precede the analysis of the finds; as the illustrated documentation is not yet available, one will confine oneself, on the one hand, to referring to architecture only when it provides details for the stratigraphy and, on the other hand, to giving only the salient features of the pottery to justify the attribution of the layers. The present report is therefore rather an account of the results obtained than an exhaustive study of these soundings.

To avoid repetition, we indicate in advance the chronology adopted after ENKOMI-ALASIA I, and the abbreviations used in the following pages:

Middle Bronze: MBB.C.
MB III:1700-1600
Late Bronze: RB
RB I:1600-1450
RB II:1450-1350
RB III first phase:1350-1250
RB III second phase:1250-1200
Iron Age:
Iron I initial phase:1200-1150
Iron I intermediate phase:1150-1100
Iron I final phase:1100-1050

The whole history of the site unfolds within the chronological framework above. Later periods are represented only by sporadic finds.
