SOUNDING XVI -

stratigraphy -

150 cm: Pt 15: Tomb cut into the virgin soil to the South of the sounding: oval pit East-West, with a niche along the South wall, in which lie 2 skeletons: one stretched out on its back, head to the West, - the other huddled at the feet of the first and covered by a stone slab inclined at 45°. Near the left arm of the first, étague perforated in ivory; under the head of the second, bowl in bronze; above, a jug with long neck and a common jar of medium size. Layer 3: 140-70 cm: fill of the pit: brown earth. Layer 2: 70-50 cm: upper part of the pit; brown earth with with abundant stones.

Pt 10: funnel-shaped tomb of stones on the axis of the pit; skeleton stretched out on its side, the skull to the East, the face to the North, the legs slightly bent. Behind the head, bowl in bronze; to the South of the thorax, from East to West, common jar, late "bucchero" jug and jug with long neck. 50 cm: aillerus, virgin soil, rock. 50-0 cm: Layer 1: everywhere, greyish earth.

Material -

Layers 3 and 2: Sherds mixed Late Bronze and Iron I; 2 terracotta loom-weights of Iron I type.

Layer 1: Rare pottery of early and intermediate Iron I: "wavy line" bowls of the early type, with simple decoration: bowl with flaring rim and double black line on the inside; carinated bowl in whitish pottery; small cylindrical spout in white paste with red decoration.

Conclusions -

The whole installation goes back to the beginning of the Iron Age I: establishment of tomb Pt 15, filling of the pit with imported materials (hence the mixing observed), then a new burial Pt 10 on the same spot, which is soon abandoned.
