of Ayia Irini, and confirm the predominance of the bull cult (exceptionally that of the deer) in Cyprus during the transitional period from Bronze to Iron (12th-10th c. B.C.). Henceforth, we see that the cult practices of the sanctuary of Ayia Irini constitute the most recent manifestation of religious traditions which go back to Ayios Jakovos and now to Enkomi to the Bronze Age. They seem to have been particularly vigorous in the Protogeometric or Cypro- Geometric I period. Moreover, it is interesting to note that the stratigraphic observations made at Enkomi in 1962 find a parallel in Greece in the soundings recently carried out at Iolkos in Thessaly, south of the Mycenaean Palace ( BCH, 1961, p.768), where four Protogeometric construction phases were determined, while a burnt layer separated the Mycenaean level from the Protogeometric level.
