J. LAGARCE Enkomi, 19 November 1970

Summary report on the excavation of the wells, of the West Rampart area, of the area of quarter 7 W and of the area of street no. 5, during of the 21st campaign at Enkomi-Alasia.

THE WELLS . About thirty wells, soakaways and cisterns have been emptied. I They yielded an ample harvest of pottery from all the periods of Enkomi-Alasia, in particular of Middle Cypriot III and of the 12th century. One of these wells, located in the house of a craftsman of bronze objects, from which four swords and a chariot come of cult found in a hiding place with other objects, had been filled in, towards the end of the 13th c., with the slag that the artisan wanted to get rid of. In others, among vessels of the beginning of the 12th c., one collected a frit cup, with a bridge spout, and a hemispherical bronze bowl. The latest of the wells excavated this year, of the late 12th c., yielded in particular a series of three weights, two of haematite, in the form of elongated olives ( ( one bears an incised sign, a simple bar) and one of bronze, with lead tare, in the form of a mouse.

AREA OF THE WEST RAMPART The clearing of the surroundings of the western gate of the city was resumed and the area of 1967 extended towards the north, east and south. The first and, in places, the second floor were reached. The inhabitants of this quarter at the end of the 12th c. seem to have been of rather modest condition, and no object of particular interest is so far drawing our attention.
