Thursday 16 September 1965The North area has become considerably extended by the engagement of new workmen, the total number of whom is today 25. In the South area, towards the end of the morning a surface of stone rubble is reached backing onto the inside (= eastern face of the enclosure of the City) of the line of large blocks, at an average depth of - 0 m 60. All along the day the clearing confirms this internal stone filling of the enclosure, over at least three metres in width. The characteristic feature of this second day of excavation remains the general absence of pottery sherds, and of any trace of stratigraphy (the 60 cm covering the stone filling being only an alluvial deposit compact, clayey, brown, perfectly sterile, accumulated at an indeterminate date).
