Hearth 911
Clearing and cleaning for photography of layer 1 = F1 or upper layer of hearth 911, preserved in place since its discovery in Sept 1963. Hearth F1 then appears as a surface roughly horizontal, and rectangular, of one metre fifty long along the east-west axis and eighty centimetres wide along the north south axis. A* This surface F1 (1) is made up of a paving of sherds joined together, the concave face of these always turned towards the ground. A median zone located at two thirds of the east-west axis towards the west is occupied by alternating layers of clay* and ash, where we found no sherd. B The north-east quarter of this hearth F1 appears to be made up of sherds of a jar, in coarse earth of which one could clearly distinguish a fragment of neck, very short and of
Note. * reddish, compacted clay. * See Strat. section of the Hearths.
