Engomi 21 Sept.

Sir

Your letter of the 17th has just reached me and I am replying at once, surprised that you have not yet received the first . In summary, no notable difficulty except the usual small problems . We are starting our second week of excavation with 29 workmen ; their recruitment having, as I wrote to you, been the biggest problem. Nevertheless we take on every valid workman who presents himself, and we continue to canvass the villages . At the camp, our installation works perfectly . The mayor of Engomi has practised water blackmail for a week, claiming not to be able to supply us without his efforts being remunerated
