Tr. 222/3E contd)

By experiment, the brick fragments found fallen within the kiln during excavation were not found to exceed represent more than about 15 bricks. ie considerably fewer than the 35 or so calculated on p 33 as necessary to complete the existing courses. It seems reasonably ∴ to conclude that originally there were no further courses of brick. The original roof (of unknown nature ? flagstones removed for another purpose) probably reposed above the 9th brick course therefore. N.B. the 9th brick level is roughly level with the top of the lintel of the door, and the surrounding stone wall and fill nowhere exceed this height.
