el Amarna.

The palace of this period, i.e. of the first half of the XIVème century and which must doubtless go back to the XVème, remains to be discovered —

We have reasons [handwritten: de] to suppose that it must be sought in the eastern part of the town, where our soundings have revealed several houses as well as tombs contemporary with the XVIIIème dynasty.

Our stratigraphic excavations at the site of the palace of the last Mycenaean period at Enkomi, without having reached the limits of this vast construction, have made it possible to recognise its architecture and its layout.

Its walls are everywhere founded on the rock, the building having been erected on available ground, at the edge of the older quarters of the town.

After having been burnt, the palace was divided into several small houses and bronze-foundry workshops, whose installations occupy four successive levels covering the building.

The history of this residence that we are going to summarise[handwritten: e] in chronological order[handwritten: e], faithfully reflects the vicissitudes of life in this city of Cyprus during its final period, that of the XIIIè to the XIè centuries, one of the most obscure periods in the archaeology of the island, and in the history of Mediterranean countries in general.

As it will not be possible within the scope of this communication to detail an archaeological material comprising several thousand pieces, which are distributed stratigraphically over six different levels, I would like to point out that my report on the excavation campaigns of 1949 and 1950, a volume entitled: Enkomi-Alasia [handwritten: II], is being composed and will appear by the end of the year.
