PHOTOS OF BAMBOULA

J.F.Daniel's photographs of the excavations on the Bamboula were taken with a Rolleiflex, using roll film with 12 shots to a roll. For each of the seasons of excavations the rolls were lettered and then in most cases the preliminary designation of the photograph by roll letter and number within the roll (A9 for example) was changed to a continuous series of numbers. The first series ran through the 1937-1938 seasons and a new series was started for 1939; the 1948 photos were never numbered beyond the original designation. Apparently the film itself continued to be identified by the original letter and the year. The following list gives the films and photographs for each year and the numbering system as far as it can be deduced from the field notebooks.

1937 13 rolls, numbered A-M, were taken, and the photographs were then numbered in a continuous series 1-142, which numbers are entered in the notebooks in ink over the pencilled original roll numbers.

1938 25 rolls, A-Y, were taken. The numbering system of 1937 was then continued from 143-294, which covered the films A-P. Q-Y, 1-12 each, were not given numbers in the series and the original letter and number designations remain in pencil in the notebooks Another series designated V.G.1-33 is recorded in the notebooks of this season as well; there is no indication of the size of these photographs.

1939 39 rolls, A-Z and AA-MM, were taken. A new numbering system was started, with the designations '39,1-290 for the outdoor photographs, which use up rolls A-Y5. From Y6-MM the films were used for a series of photographs of objects and this series was given no other numbering system. There is a second series designated V.G.1-29, taken in March, 1939.

1940-41 A series numbered V.G. 1-43 was taken.

1948 8 rolls of 12 each, lettered B-I, were taken. No other numbering system had been given the photographs as yet.

Total There have thus been taken 85 rolls of 12 pictures each during the seasons 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1948, or a total of 1020 pictures. Allowing for certain misadventures and for photographs taken ex-Bamboula, there should be about 950 photographs of the Bamboula excavations and objects found there. This is besides the three small series of photographs taken by V. Grace in 1938, 1939 and 1940-1941.
